This post is a bit different to our usual ones and that’s because we have been nominated for the Sunshine Blogger Award, thank you Laura – CountryGirlExplores!
“This award is awarded by bloggers to new bloggers to recognise achievements and offer support”
We have been asked to answer 10 questions set by Laura so here goes –
1. How long have you been blogging for and what inspired you to get started?
We have been blogging for almost 6 months so not long at all!
Sarah makes a travel book each year of our travel photographs and notes of where we’ve been that year and what we’ve been up to. We were thinking that actually over time we have learned a lot and seen a lot of great places and it would be good to share that with others interested in travel.
So that’s how Roads & Runways was started, we have a lot to share with you all and are still continuing to travel part time during vacation time from our full time jobs.
Wondering why Roads & Runways? Well our favourite method of travel is by far the ‘fly drive’ type, so what better name for our blog!
2. Do you have any tips to give to anyone thinking about blogging or someone new to blogging?
We are fairly new to blogging ourselves and we’re still learning but tips we would give would be to write posts that are interesting to you. If you write something that is interesting to you you will produce your best work because you will be enjoying the writing process.
Also we would encourage you to get involved in the travel community on social media. There are lots of travel bloggers out there and most are happy to give you feedback and tips, or are just great to chat to about where they’re going next.
3. What do you find most challenging about blogging?
So far we are enjoying blogging and find it fun. Rather than challenging it’s a great outlet for telling our travel stories and putting together guides on what we’ve learned in the hope it will help others. We do a lot of planning generally for our trips and it takes time collecting all of this information, hopefully someone else will find it useful to have this information all in one place!
4. What is your long term goal for your blog?
If we can work with some travel companies that would be fantastic, we’re happy to review products, hotels, transport etc.
Our main goal is to provide useful and/or entertaining content for others with a love for travel and for those who are just looking for some information to help them out planning their next holiday.
5. Where is the best place that you have ever visited and why?
We loved our West Coast Road Trip we spent 3 weeks in the Western States checking out the Pacific North West, the Californian coast, Route 66, the Grand Canyon and Las Vegas. While we were on this trip we got engaged in San Francisco!
6. What item could you not travel without and why?
We always have some kind of camera, even if it’s just the ones on our phones – which don’t produce bad pictures actually!
We have always loved photography, particularly when we’re travelling, and have loads of great pictures – check them out on our Instagram
7. What destination are you visiting next?
We are heading back to the USA next for our honeymoon! Here’s our rough itinerary –
8. What are the top 5 destinations that you would like to visit and why?
We have wanted to visit Iceland for a long time, it has loads of things to see and it’s just a short flight from the UK. We would love to visit the geysers, glaciers and hopefully view the northern lights!
Richard spend a month in Japan as a teenager and has always wanted to revisit. Japan is high up on our next place to visit list. Ideally we will visit during cherry blossom season.
3. Galapagos Islands
The Galapagos Islands has to be one of the best places in the world for viewing wildlife, and unusual wildlife as well which has had limited contact with humans. This and the diversity of the landscapes of the archipelago, the active volcano and clear waters has made the Galapagos a must visit for us.
Alaska offers an off the beaten path experience where you can really get out and experience nature with very few others to share it with. Dubbed the ‘last frontier’ of the USA this state has made our must visit list for both its unspoiled scenery and abundance of wildlife to view.
5. South Africa
A future trip to South Africa made our list after seeing the episode of Man finds Food there. Cape Town looks like an awesome city to spend a few days and while you’re in South Africa you can get out on Safari which is something I’d love to do. Richard hasn’t visited the southern hemisphere yet and I have only been once on a trip to Australia so this would be a very different experience for us compared with our travels so far!
9. What social media site is your favourite for travel inspiration?
Trip Advisor gives us more travel ideas and inspiration than any other site, and did you know there is a forum on Trip Advisor? There’s a forum for every place and travel style you can think of and most boards are pretty active with each having nominated destination experts ready to give advice, often they are local people.
10. Aside from blogging, what are your hobbies?
We are foodies and love cooking and eating out!
We also enjoy spending time outdoors, cycling, sailing, kayaking and camping.
That’s all from us! Check out the blogs of our nominees below and also don’t miss Laura’s blog who nominated us – Country Girl Explores
